Did you know this month is Great Outdoors Month? Summer is the best time of year to spend outdoors (next to the fall months). It’s a great time of year to attend some yard sales (like the great one in Hughestown last weekend!), camp, fish, hike, kayak ... really, any outdoor activity is perfect this time of year.

This month, challenge yourself to try something new outside. Our area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, from hiking to fishing and even rock climbing.

So get outside and have fun! But first, here’s what’s happening in Hughestown:

Council news

The next Hughestown Borough Council meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, in the borough building with Mayor Wayne Quick presiding.

Repairs to Centennial Pavilion will be discussed. Anyone looking to rent the pavilion should call the borough building at 570-654-2061 and leave a message.

Council thanks and congratulates Mary Ann Quick, Mary Golya and all who assisted with the community yard sale. It was a great success and we can’t wait for next year’s!

Summer is here, and that means lots of yard work. Residents with overgrown grass and hedges are being contacted and citations have been given out. Let’s keep Hughestown Borough clean.

Paper shredding will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 16. This is a great opportunity to safely get rid of confidential and private papers.

Hose company

chicken dinner

Hughestown Hose Company will host a chicken dinner from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 6. A donation of $10 for adults and $7 for children is asked to enjoy the dinner and support the hose company.

Crime Watch

Hughestown Crime Watch will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 2, at the Hughestown Hose Company.

The Crime Watch meets the first Monday of the month and everyone is encouraged to attend. Please take the time to support this important endeavor.

Picnic in the Park

Hughestown Picnic in the Park is scheduled for Saturday, July 21. The party will be held from noon to 4 p.m.

All the favorite attractions will be on hand, including the bounce house, pony rides, safety information offered by the Hughestown Hose Company, the Pittston City Fire House, a DJ, face painting, and loads of games for everyone.

Carmen Ambrosino is chairman of this event.

Plenty of food will be available and the community is invited to attend for some family-friendly fun!

Anniversary wishes

Council sends happy anniversary wishes to Jay Delaney and Dorothy Delaney, June 16, and to Dr. Chuck Gorey and Cheryl Gorey, June 16.
