Paper shredding and white goods, bulk item collections
All residents are reminded to mark their calendars for these special events in town: white goods pickup, Wednesday, July 11; paper shredding event, Saturday, Sept. 15, and bulk item/furniture collection, Monday, Sept. 17.
The Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. Food can be picked up in the rear entry of the building.
Volunteers are needed to unload and distribute food at 1:30 p.m.
Langcliffe games, puzzle
and movie nights
Langcliffe Presbyterian Church will host its monthly game night at 5 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the church, 1001 Main St. They will have an assortment of fun games to play. Stop by to learn a new game or play an old favorite. All ages are welcome.
The church will host Puzzles for the Young at Heart, a puzzle night for adults, at 6 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the church. Join in the fun and enjoy snacks and conversation while putting a puzzle together.
The following month, the church will have a movie night at 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, at the church. This free event features family-friendly movies, a popcorn machine and a giant screen.
Little League meeting
The Avoca/Dupont Little League will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the Little League field, 700 Mill St. The agenda includes the spring season, All-Star teams and schedule, field cleanup and regular league business.
All coaches are required to attend the meeting. Anyone who wants to volunteer or has a general interest in the league is welcome to attend.
Queen of the Apostles news
Queen of the Apostles Parish’s Spring Back to Life and Step Out to Lunch group will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Marie’s Diner, 207 McAlpine St., Duryea. Anyone can attend to share a meal and enjoy some companionship. To register, please call Kay Price 570-504-4199. Please note the lunch is self-pay.
The parish also has created an outreach ministry to parishioners 80-years-old and older. With it, parishioners receive a monthly phone call to stay connected to the parish and community to discuss a variety of topics. To add someone to the list, call Kay Price.
The parish announced the following meetings: pastoral council, 7 p.m., Monday, June 11, rectory, and worship committee, 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 18, rectory.
The parish will have its annual all-you-can-eat pig roast from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Queen of the Apostles Parish Hall, 742 Spring St. Takeout dinners will be available all day. Additional seating will be available under an outdoor tent.
The menu includes roasted pig on the spit, wimpies, hot dogs, corn on the cob, salads, desserts, soda and water. There also will be a cash prize grand raffle, basket raffle, children’s games and a bake sale.
Tickets, which are $20 for adults, $10 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and younger, are available in advance or at the event.

Tax and trash bill reminder
Avoca Tax Collector Therese Wrubel announced the Luzerne County and Avoca Borough taxes had been distributed, and the 2018 garbage fee bill for homeowners and rental property owners can still be paid.
Residents can pay both bills from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays in the Avoca Municipal Building, 950 Main St. Residents can also pay the bills via mail by sending their payments to Therese Wrubel, 129 Factory St., Avoca, PA 18641.
If you need a receipt for the tax bill, send both copies of the bill with a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
The fee to have up to three bags of garbage collected weekly has not increased this year. It is $195 if purchased by June 21. After June 21, all unpaid bills will be turned over to the magistrate.

Fire department softball tournament
Avoca Fire Department will have its annual softball tournament beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 through Sunday, Aug. 12, at the Avoca Little League Field, 700 Mill St. There will be two brackets: emergency services and competitive. Cost is $175 per team.

Yard waste collection
Avoca Borough collects yard waste every Tuesday. A maximum of three standard sized garbage cans filled with yard waste not to exceed 30 pounds, will be allowed per collection.
Residents can place the following separated items in the containers: grass clippings and leaves, shrubs, hedge clippings and tree limbs which should not exceed 3 feet in length and ½ inch in diameter.
Rocks, stones, dirt and animal waste are not acceptable forms of yard waste.
Also, please do not place yard waste in 55-gallon drums, large wheeled garbage cans, large plastic storage totes or plastic bags. Items in these containers will not be collected.
Collection containers should be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on collection days.
